Mental illness is a disease that causes mild to severe disturbances in thought and or behavior, resulting in an inability to cope with life’s ordinary demands and routines. Evidence has shown that mental illness is related to or triggered by excessive stress due to a particular situation or series of psycho-social events in the individual’s life. This may include reaction to environmental stressors, genetic factors, biochemical imbalances, or a combination of these and is often physical as well as emotional and psychological in symptoms presentation. With proper care and treatment, many individuals learn to cope or recover from an acute mental illness or emotional disorder. Because there is no cure for psychiatric and mental disorders, the goal is to use the evidence-based outcome to develop patient-centered care to safely and effectively manage any presenting symptoms and disorders.
